Nutrition tips to keep the gut healthy this monsoon season

The humid and cold weather reduces your digestive power(Agni) as described in Ayurveda as we get easily in contact with germs causing stomach infections with symptoms of bloating, gas, loose stools, fever, allergies. But the good news is we can make our gut strong as 70 percent of our immune cells lies

in the gut.

  1. Include home cooked soft easy to digest meals like khichadi, upma, soups, idli etc as digestion is slow during this season. Chewing into bite size help release of saliva which helps with digestion of food.

  2. Balance of gut bacteria through different coloured fruits and vegetables and prebiotic rich foods via lentils, beans, millets to feed the good bacteria.

  3. Including good fats and fat soluble vitamins for release of bile in the liver for fat digestion and are needed for the mucosal layer which is the protection around the gut. Also including vitamin C rich foods via citrus fruits like oranges, bell peppers, broccoli.

  4. Coriander, ginger, turmeric, cinnamon have anti-inflammatory properties and help in reducing inflammation during viral fever.

  5. Including 10 minutes Pranayama daily helps in supporting immune health.

Green soup recipe for supporting immune health


Ingredients

  1. Palak- 1 bunch

  2. Pumpkin- 100 gms

  3. Carrot- 50 gms

  4. ginger - 30gms

  5. Lemon grass- 1 stalk

  6. celery- 15gms

  7. whole spices- 2 cloves, 1 cinnamon stick

  8. water - 2 cups

  9. seasonings - salt, pepper, lemon juice

  10. Fresh whey water - 1 cup

  11. Corn Kernels- handful

Method

  1. Make fresh stock with ginger, lemon grass, celery, whole spices, water. Strain and add to the vegetables- spinach, pumpkin, carrot.

  2. Let it boil for 15 minutes once veggies are cooked. Blend and add seasonings.

  3. Also add whey water made from fresh paneer and corn towards the end and enjoy.
